Overview

azilsartan choline is a specific salt formulation of azilsartan, a potent and selective non-peptide angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor antagonist (ARB). Developed by Jiangsu Hengrui Medicine, it is intended for the treatment of essential hypertension. By selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in tissues such as vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland, azilsartan inhibits the vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II, thereby reducing peripheral vascular resistance and lowering blood pressure. Clinical development has included Phase 1 studies comparing the pharmacokinetic profile and bioavailability of the choline salt against the parent azilsartan acid and the prodrug azilsartan medoxomil.
