Overview

Azilsartan medoxomil is a prodrug angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat hypertension, either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. After oral administration, it is hydrolyzed in the gastrointestinal tract to its active metabolite, azilsartan. Azilsartan selectively and competitively binds as an antagonist to the angiotensin II type-1 (AT1) receptor, blocking the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II. This results in decreased peripheral resistance and vascular smooth muscle tone, leading to lower blood pressure. Azilsartan has a high affinity for AT1 receptors and dissociates more slowly than other ARBs, contributing to its longer duration of action. It was developed primarily for the management of hypertension in adults[1][2][5][6][8].
