Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Azilsartan medoxomil + metformin is an **oral combination drug** consisting of **azilsartan medoxomil**, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), and **metformin**, a biguanide antihyperglycemic agent. Azilsartan medoxomil is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to azilsartan, which selectively blocks angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptors in vascular smooth muscle and adrenal gland, resulting in vasodilation and reduction of aldosterone-mediated effects such as sodium retention and potassium excretion. Metformin primarily acts by decreasing hepatic glucose production, improving insulin sensitivity, and increasing peripheral glucose uptake. The combination has been studied for its potential benefits in patients with both hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus, aiming to provide both antihypertensive and antihyperglycemic effects in a single tablet. The combination is not known to be commercially available as a fixed-dose product, but has been evaluated in clinical trials. The developer and trial sponsor was Takeda.
