Overview

Azilsartan potassium is a potent and highly selective angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptor antagonist belonging to the class of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). It is used primarily for the treatment of hypertension. By selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, azilsartan potassium inhibits the vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II, thereby reducing peripheral vascular resistance and lowering blood pressure. Unlike many other ARBs, azilsartan exhibits superior binding affinity and slower dissociation from the AT1 receptor, which contributes to its potent and sustained antihypertensive effect. It was originally developed by Takeda and is marketed under the brand name Azilva in countries like Japan and China. In other regions, such as the United States and Europe, the drug is typically administered as the prodrug azilsartan medoxomil (Edarbi).
