Overview

Azilsartan trimethylethanolamine is a small-molecule angiotensin II type 1 receptor antagonist (ARB) developed for the treatment of hypertension. It works by selectively blocking the angiotensin II type 1 receptor on vascular smooth muscle cells, thereby inhibiting the vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II. This leads to relaxation of blood vessels and reduction in blood pressure. The drug is an alternative salt form (choline/trimethylethanolamine) of azilsartan and has been studied primarily in China as a new molecular entity distinct from the more widely used prodrug azilsartan medoxomil[8][3][7].
