Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is effective against respiratory tract infections (such as bronchitis and pneumonia), skin and soft tissue infections, ear and sinus infections, sexually transmitted diseases (including chlamydia), and certain enteric infections. It is also used to prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection in people with HIV. Mechanistically, azithromycin binds to the 23S rRNA of the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis by blocking the transpeptidation/translocation step and assembly of the ribosomal subunit. This action halts bacterial growth. In addition to its antibacterial effects, azithromycin has immunomodulatory properties that have been explored in chronic respiratory inflammatory diseases. The drug was discovered by Pliva in Yugoslavia (now Croatia) in 1980 and approved for medical use in 1988[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
