Azithromycin + ceftriaxone is a combination of two antibiotics used together primarily to treat certain bacterial infections, most notably uncomplicated gonorrhea and community-acquired pneumonia. Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, while also exhibiting immunomodulatory effects. Ceftriaxone is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins. The combination provides broad-spectrum coverage against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Neisseria gonorrhoeae and common respiratory pathogens. This dual therapy has been shown to be highly effective in eradicating gonococcal infection and improving outcomes in severe infections such as sepsis or pneumonia[1][2][5]. The use of both agents together helps reduce the risk of resistance development.
