Overview
Azithromycin + ciprofloxacin is a combination antibiotic regimen investigated by CHU de Quebec-Universite Laval for the periodical presumptive treatment (PPT) of sexually transmitted infections. This specific intervention was studied in a Phase 3 cluster-randomized trial (NCT00115388) to evaluate its impact on the prevalence of *Neisseria gonorrhoeae* and *Chlamydia trachomatis* among female sex workers in West Africa. Azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic, inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. Ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, inhibits bacterial DNA replication by targeting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. The trial utilized a monthly dosing schedule where azithromycin (1g) and ciprofloxacin (500mg) were administered in alternating months to reduce the burden of infection and secondary HIV transmission.
