Overview

This is a combination therapy consisting of three agents: - **Azithromycin** (a macrolide antibiotic with anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties), - **N-acetylcysteine** (a mucolytic and antioxidant agent that helps break down mucus and reduce oxidative stress), and - **Inhaled corticosteroid** (ICS; such as budesonide or fluticasone, which are anti-inflammatory agents delivered directly to the lungs). The combination is used primarily in the management of chronic respiratory diseases, including post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (PIBO), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, and mycoplasma pneumonia. The rationale for this regimen is to target multiple pathological processes—bacterial infection/inflammation (azithromycin), mucus hypersecretion/oxidative stress (N-acetylcysteine), and airway inflammation (inhaled corticosteroid)—to improve lung function, reduce symptoms, decrease exacerbations, and potentially minimize systemic steroid exposure[1][2][4][9].
