Azlocillin + chloramphenicol is a combination of two antibiotics used for their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. Azlocillin is an extended-spectrum acylampicillin (a beta-lactam antibiotic) that acts by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting the final stage of cell wall synthesis and leading to bacterial lysis. Chloramphenicol is a bacteriostatic agent that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, specifically blocking peptidyl transferase activity and preventing peptide bond formation. This combination may be considered in clinical scenarios where coverage for both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including resistant strains, is desired. The combination has been studied for potential interactions; while minor delays in bactericidal action have been observed at low concentrations, no significant antagonism or clinically relevant negative interaction has been established[1][6][8]. Both drugs are well absorbed and distributed throughout body tissues.
