AZN-L50 is a monoclonal antibody clone that specifically targets CD166, also known as Activated Leukocyte Cell Adhesion Molecule (ALCAM). CD166 is a transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily that mediates both heterophilic (CD6-CD166) and homophilic (CD166-CD166) cell-cell interactions. In the context of oncology, particularly ovarian cancer, CD166 is associated with the formation of multicellular spheroids, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and the maintenance of cancer stem cell (CSC) characteristics, which contribute to peritoneal metastasis and platinum-based chemoresistance. AZN-L50 acts as an inhibitory antibody that blocks CD166 function, thereby disrupting these processes. Research has shown that combining AZN-L50 with carboplatin can enhance apoptosis and reduce the tumorigenic potential of chemoresistant ovarian cancer cells, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic strategy to sensitize tumors to standard chemotherapy.
