Overview

Azoximer bromide, marketed under the brand name Polyoxidonium, is a synthetic high-molecular-weight immunomodulator developed by NPO Petrovax Pharm. Chemically, it is a copolymer of N-oxide 1,4-ethylenepiperazine and (N-carboxymethyl)-1,4-ethylenepiperazine bromide. The drug exhibits a multifaceted mechanism of action, primarily stimulating innate immunity by enhancing the activity of macrophages, neutrophils, and natural killer (NK) cells. Additionally, it possesses antioxidant and detoxifying properties, which help reduce the systemic toxicity of other therapeutic agents. Azoximer bromide is widely used in Russia and CIS countries for the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases, including acute respiratory infections and COVID-19, and has been investigated as a concomitant therapy in oncology (e.g., melanoma) to improve patient survival and time to progression.
