Azudox

Azudox is a brand-name formulation of the tetracycline antibiotic doxycycline, produced by Kampala Pharmaceutical Industries. It is a broad-spectrum small molecule antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Beyond its conventional use for bacterial infections, Azudox has been investigated in clinical trials for the treatment of Nodding Syndrome, a debilitating neurological disorder found in sub-Saharan Africa. The therapeutic hypothesis in this context is that doxycycline targets *Wolbachia*, an endosymbiotic bacterium of the filarial parasite *Onchocerca volvulus*. By eliminating *Wolbachia*, the drug aims to reduce the neuro-inflammatory processes and cross-reactive antibody titers (such as leiomodin antibodies) that are suspected of driving the pathogenesis of Nodding Syndrome.
