AZX-100 is a synthetic 24-amino acid, cell-permeant peptide that mimics the activity of heat shock protein 20 (HSP20). It is designed to bypass upstream signaling pathways and directly induce smooth muscle relaxation and modulate fibrosis. The drug was developed for the prevention or reduction of hypertrophic and keloid scarring, as well as for potential applications in pulmonary fibrosis and intimal hyperplasia. Preclinical studies have shown that AZX-100 can prevent decreases in cerebral perfusion after subarachnoid hemorrhage without affecting blood pressure or heart rate at therapeutic doses. Clinical development reached Phase 2 trials for scar reduction, specifically targeting keloid and hypertrophic scars. Developers: Capstone Therapeutics Capstone Therapeutics (formerly OrthoLogic) holds exclusive worldwide rights to AZX-100. The drug has completed Phase 2 clinical trials for scar reduction but does not appear to be approved or marketed at this time. It represents a novel approach in the modulation of smooth muscle relaxation and tissue fibrosis.
