Overview

**AZX1103** was an orally delivered, non-systemic recombinant beta-lactamase enzyme combination developed by AzurRx BioPharma to prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea and hospital-acquired gastrointestinal infections, including infections associated with *Clostridioides difficile* and vancomycin-resistant enterococci. The bacterial-origin enzymes were designed to inactivate residual beta-lactam antibiotics after they entered the gastrointestinal tract, thereby limiting antibiotic-mediated disruption of the gut microbiome without reducing the intended systemic activity of parenterally administered antibiotics. In preclinical Göttingen minipig studies, AZX1103 degraded amoxicillin in the presence of clavulanic acid and was not detectably absorbed into systemic circulation. AzurRx discontinued the preclinical program in 2020 to concentrate resources on MS1819.
