Overview

Azyter is a preservative-free ophthalmic solution containing 1.5% azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic of the azalide subclass. Developed by Laboratoires Théa, it is specifically indicated for the treatment of purulent bacterial conjunctivitis and trachomatous conjunctivitis caused by *Chlamydia trachomatis*. The formulation utilizes a medium-chain triglyceride vehicle that enhances the residence time of the active ingredient on the ocular surface, allowing for a simplified and shortened dosing regimen of one drop twice daily for three days. Azithromycin works by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, which inhibits RNA-dependent protein synthesis and prevents the growth of susceptible bacteria.
