Overview

B. subtilis-cNK-2 is an oral vaccine and antibiotic alternative being developed by US Biologic in collaboration with the USDA Agricultural Research Service for the prevention and treatment of poultry coccidiosis. The therapeutic utilizes the OrisBio platform, which employs recombinant *Bacillus subtilis* spores engineered to express chicken NK-lysin peptide 2 (cNK-2), a host-derived antimicrobial peptide. The mechanism of action involves the direct disruption of the *Eimeria* sporozoite membrane during the invasive stage of the parasite's life cycle, leading to cytotoxic effects. Additionally, the treatment modulates local inflammatory responses, enhances gut integrity, and stabilizes the gut microbiota in broiler chickens. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that oral administration significantly reduces fecal oocyst shedding and improves growth performance, positioning it as a potential replacement for traditional ionophores and chemical coccidiostats in commercial poultry production.
