Overview

B7A is a human challenge strain of Enterotoxigenic *Escherichia coli* (ETEC) used in controlled human infection model (CHIM) studies to evaluate the safety and protective efficacy of candidate vaccines and therapeutics. It is a live bacterial inoculum, serotyped as O148:H28, that expresses the colonization factor CS6 along with both heat-labile (LT) and heat-stable (ST) enterotoxins. Originally isolated from a US military adult who developed acute diarrhea in Vietnam, B7A is currently the only CS6-expressing ETEC challenge strain utilized in human clinical trials. In studies such as those conducted by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the strain is orally administered to healthy adult volunteers to induce moderate-to-severe diarrhea, serving as a standardized biological model for testing interventions like Anti-CS6 Bovine Serum Immunoglobulin (BSIgG).
