Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Babao Dan + lactulose is a combination therapy consisting of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula **Babao Dan (BBD)** and the synthetic osmotic laxative **lactulose**. Babao Dan is a complex herbal mixture composed of eight primary ingredients, including natural calculus bovis, pearl, musk, snake gall, and radix notoginseng. The combination is primarily investigated for the treatment of **minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE)** in patients with liver cirrhosis. Its therapeutic effect is mediated through the inhibition of the **TLR4 (Toll-like receptor 4)** signaling pathway, which reduces systemic inflammation by lowering levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. Additionally, lactulose contributes by reducing blood ammonia levels through its osmotic effect and modulation of gut microbiota. The combination has also been explored for potential benefits in hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
