Bacampicillin

Bacampicillin is a semi-synthetic penicillin antibiotic and a prodrug of ampicillin, designed to improve oral bioavailability compared to ampicillin. After oral administration, it is rapidly hydrolyzed by esterases in the intestinal wall to release active ampicillin. The released ampicillin exerts bactericidal activity by inhibiting the biosynthesis of bacterial cell wall mucopeptides through binding and inhibition of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Bacampicillin was primarily used for treating various susceptible bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, and acute uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis. It was marketed under brand names such as Spectrobid (Pfizer) and Penglobe (AstraZeneca), but has been discontinued in many markets including the United States[1][2][4][5][6].
