Overview

Baccatin III is a complex taxane diterpenoid and a critical chemical intermediate in the semi-synthesis of the antineoplastic drug paclitaxel (Taxol) and its derivatives. Developed and manufactured by Chongqing Xinke Pharmaceutical (XinKe), it is primarily sourced through extraction from the needles and bark of various yew tree species (*Taxus*). While Baccatin III itself lacks the potent cytotoxic activity of finished taxanes due to the absence of the C-13 side chain, it provides the essential tetracyclic taxane core required for the production of microtubule-stabilizing agents. These final drugs exert their anticancer effects by binding to the beta-subunit of tubulin, promoting microtubule assembly and stabilizing them against depolymerization. This action leads to mitotic arrest in the G2/M phase and subsequent apoptosis of cancer cells, making it a vital component in the production of treatments for breast, ovarian, and lung cancers.
