Overview

Bacillus calmette-guerin substrain danish 1331 live antigen is a biologic vaccine derived from an attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis, specifically the Danish (Copenhagen) 1331 substrain. It is primarily used for the prevention of tuberculosis and as an intravesical immunotherapy for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. The mechanism of action involves stimulation of the host immune system, leading to enhanced cellular immunity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis or tumor cells in the bladder. The vaccine was originally developed by Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin, with this particular substrain produced and distributed by Statens Serum Institut in Denmark and later AJ Vaccines. Efficacy varies geographically and between different strains, but no significant differences in efficacy have been observed between major strains such as Danish 1331 and Moscow-I[3][5][6].
