Overview

Bacillus cereus is a ubiquitous gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium found in soil. While it is a known foodborne pathogen capable of causing severe systemic infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals and preterm neonates, it is also investigated for its therapeutic potential as a probiotic. In this capacity, it is studied for its ability to modulate gut microbiota to treat conditions such as constipation in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). It has also been evaluated for preventing treatment-associated diarrhea, such as that caused by afatinib. Beyond its medical applications, Bacillus cereus is also involved in industrial processes like poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) production and nonylphenol biodegradation.
