Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bacillus coagulans Hammer is a gram-positive, spore-forming, lactic acid-producing bacterium that serves as the type strain for the species. Originally isolated by B.W. Hammer in 1915 from evaporated milk, it is distinguished by its ability to form endospores, which grant it significant resistance to high temperatures and the acidic environment of the stomach. As a probiotic, it is used to support gastrointestinal health, modulate the gut microbiota, and manage conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Recent research has focused on its potential antineoplastic properties, specifically the ability of its derivatives, such as extracellular vesicles, to induce apoptosis in colorectal adenocarcinoma cells through the modulation of cell death pathways.
