Overview

Bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856 is a specific, patented strain of spore-forming probiotic bacteria developed and manufactured by Sabinsa Corporation and marketed under the brand name LactoSpore®. [1, 2, 7] As a spore-forming organism, it is highly stable at room temperature and can survive the acidic environment of the stomach to germinate and proliferate in the intestines. [7, 13] It has received Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status from the US FDA. [4, 14] Clinical studies have evaluated its efficacy in managing digestive health issues. Notably, a pilot clinical study demonstrated that supplementation with B. coagulans MTCC 5856 improved symptoms of both major depressive disorder (MDD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in patients with both conditions. [4, 6, 8] The proposed mechanism involves modulating the gut microbiome and the gut-brain axis, which was supported by a significant reduction in the inflammatory biomarker myeloperoxidase in study participants. [4] Other studies have also shown its effectiveness in improving symptoms of diarrhea-predominant IBS and functional gas and bloating. [3, 4, 11]
