Overview
Bacillus licheniformis is a spore-forming, Gram-positive bacterium used as a live biotherapeutic product (probiotic). It is typically administered orally in capsule or granule form. Upon ingestion, the spores germinate in the gastrointestinal tract. The live bacteria then exert their therapeutic effects by modulating the gut microbiome. They compete with and antagonize pathogenic bacteria and fungi, promote the growth of beneficial anaerobic bacteria by consuming intestinal oxygen, and produce antimicrobial substances. [6, 9] This helps to restore a healthy balance of intestinal flora. It is used for treating and preventing conditions related to gut dysbiosis, such as acute and chronic enteritis and diarrhea. [9] Clinical trials are also exploring its use as an adjunctive therapy to manage side effects and improve outcomes in conditions like sepsis, cancer, Parkinson's disease, and cirrhosis.
