Overview

*Bacillus subtilis* is a Gram-positive, aerobic, spore-forming bacterium widely utilized as a probiotic and live biotherapeutic product. It functions by restoring intestinal microbial balance, inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria through competitive exclusion and the production of antimicrobial lipopeptides (such as surfactin), and modulating host immune responses. In clinical practice, it is frequently used to treat diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and intestinal dysbiosis, often formulated in combination with other probiotics like *Enterococcus faecium*. Beyond gastrointestinal health, *B. subtilis* is being investigated for neuroprotective effects in neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease, where it may activate the p38 MAPK/Nrf2 signaling pathway to prevent alpha-synuclein aggregation. Additionally, it serves as a recombinant delivery platform for oral vaccines, such as DreamTec's COVID-19 vaccine candidate, which expresses the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein on the spore surface to elicit an immune response.
