Bacillus subtilis CU1 is a probiotic strain of Bacillus subtilis, classified as Bacillus subtilis subsp. spizizenii, developed for use as an ingredient in food and dietary supplements. It has been clinically studied in elderly and adult populations for its ability to stimulate systemic and mucosal immune responses. Mechanisms include priming the innate immune system, increasing secretion of immunoglobulin A (SIgA) in stool and saliva, and upregulating activation markers (e.g., CD69) on monocytes. It also enhances phagocytosis and increases production of pro-inflammatory cytokines upon challenge, while reducing basal levels of inflammatory cytokines in elderly subjects. It produces antimicrobial substances, such as amicoumacins, and may antagonize gastrointestinal pathogens, modulate gut microbiota, and enhance epithelial barrier function. Clinical studies indicate safety and good tolerability in humans, with no significant antibiotic resistance, hemolytic activity, or toxigenic effects[1][2][3][5].
