Overview

Bacillus subtilis MB40 is a non-genetically engineered, spore-forming probiotic bacterial strain marketed under the brand name Sporevia. Originally developed by BIO-CAT Microbials and licensed to Kerry Group in 2021, it is derived from the Bacillus subtilis Marburg type strain DSM 10. The strain is characterized by high spore stability and works through multiple mechanisms, including the secretion of the lipopeptide fengycin, which exhibits antimicrobial activity. Clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, gas, and abdominal discomfort in healthy adults. Furthermore, it has shown significant capability in eliminating over 95% of Staphylococcus aureus colonization in the human gut and enhancing immune responses against Listeria monocytogenes in animal models. It holds FDA GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status for use in various food and beverage applications.
