Bacillus subtilis PB6

Bacillus subtilis PB6 (ATCC-PTA 6737) is a specific, patented strain of Bacillus subtilis bacteria used as a probiotic feed additive for animals and a dietary supplement with potential for human use. [1, 5, 8] It is developed and marketed by Kemin Industries under brand names such as CloSTAT for animal feed and Anaban for potential human applications. [1, 14] Originally isolated from the gut of a healthy chicken that survived a Clostridium perfringens outbreak, this spore-forming microorganism is heat-stable and can survive harsh gastrointestinal conditions. [4, 5] Its primary mechanism involves stabilizing gut flora, modulating the immune system, and competing with enteric pathogens. [8, 16] The strain produces antimicrobial substances, including fengycin and surfactin, which are active against various pathogens like Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella, and E. coli, helping to prevent conditions such as necrotic enteritis in poultry. [1, 2, 4] It is used in poultry, pigs, and cattle to improve growth performance and gut health. [1, 7, 9] Preclinical studies in mouse models have also demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects, suggesting potential future use in treating human inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), though it is not currently approved for this therapeutic purpose.
