Bacillus thuringiensis is a gram-positive, soil-dwelling bacterium widely used as a biological pesticide. It produces proteinaceous crystal toxins (Cry and Cyt proteins) during sporulation that are toxic to specific insect larvae when ingested. These toxins bind to receptors in the gut of susceptible insects (mainly Lepidoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera), causing cell lysis and death by starvation. Different subspecies or strains target different insect groups; for example, B. thuringiensis kurstaki targets caterpillars while B. thuringiensis israelensis targets mosquito larvae[1][4][5][6]. Bt is considered non-toxic to humans and most non-target organisms due to the specificity of its mode of action[2][4]. It is used in agriculture as a microbial insecticide and has also been incorporated into genetically modified crops for pest resistance[1].
