AureoGen Biosciences is developing bacitracin derivatives as a novel class of cyclic peptide antibiotics designed to combat drug-resistant bacterial infections. Bacitracin, the parent compound, is a mixture of cyclic peptides that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to undecaprenyl pyrophosphate (UPP), thereby preventing the dephosphorylation of this lipid carrier which is essential for peptidoglycan transport. AureoGen utilizes its proprietary biosynthetic engineering and medicinal chemistry platform to modify the bacitracin scaffold, aiming to overcome existing resistance mechanisms and improve the therapeutic index of the peptide. The program is currently in preclinical development, targeting pathogens such as methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant *Enterococci* (VRE).
