It functions as a growth promoter and is effective in the prevention and treatment of various enteric diseases caused by Gram-positive bacteria. The drug is not absorbed by intestinal tissues, allowing it to act locally within the gut. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, specifically by interfering with the dephosphorylation of pyrophosphate and preventing the transport and synthesis of peptidoglycan precursors, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death.
