Bacitracin Plus

The active ingredient, bacitracin, is a cyclic polypeptide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. It functions by binding to C55-isoprenyl pyrophosphate, a lipid carrier molecule, thereby preventing the dephosphorylation and recycling of the carrier required to transport peptidoglycan subunits across the bacterial cell membrane. This mechanism is primarily bactericidal against Gram-positive organisms. Despite the 'Plus' suffix, which often indicates a combination product in the topical antibiotic market, the product is specified as a single-ingredient antibiotic ointment in company documentation.
