Overview

Baco-1 is a first-generation oncolytic virus derived from herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). It was developed as a research tool and therapeutic candidate to evaluate the efficacy of viral oncolysis in various malignancies, including bladder cancer. The virus is engineered to selectively replicate within tumor cells, leading to direct cellular lysis and the subsequent release of tumor-associated antigens. This process is intended to stimulate a systemic, tumor-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte response, enhancing the overall anti-tumor effect. In preclinical models, Baco-1 has demonstrated the ability to significantly reduce tumor volume and weight when administered via intravesical instillation, although it is frequently used as a benchmark for comparing newer, more potent oncolytic platforms such as the HSV-2-based FusOn-H2.
