Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bacterial extracellular vesicles from hypervesiculating *Lactiplantibacillus plantarum* are genetically engineered probiotic-derived nanovesicles being developed for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), specifically acute colitis. Developed by researchers at the University of Maryland and spun out into Expora Therapeutics, these bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) are produced by a genetically engineered strain of *L. plantarum* that hypervesiculates via the inducible expression of a peptidoglycan-modifying enzyme, resulting in a 66-fold increase in BEV productivity. In preclinical models, these BEVs demonstrate therapeutic efficacy in attenuating acute dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis by reducing mucosal tissue damage and inflammation, offering a more stable and consistent alternative to live probiotic therapies.
