Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bacteriophage-based gel (also known as the complex antibacterial and anesthetic/analgesic bacteriophage gel) is an investigational topical and intraurethral formulation developed by the Yevdokimov Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry in collaboration with RPC MicroMir. The gel is designed to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs), including catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), and provide local anesthesia during diagnostic and therapeutic urological procedures (such as cystoscopy and catheterization). It consists of a cocktail of multiple virulent bacteriophages targeting common uropathogens (such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus mirabilis) co-formulated with the local anesthetic lidocaine hydrochloride and the antiseptic chlorhexidine hydrochloride in a water-soluble gel base. Clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing bacteriuria and post-procedural pain compared to standard chlorhexidine-lidocaine gels.
