Bacteriophage cocktail (UCSD rUTI) is an investigational biologic therapy being developed by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) for the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTI) in female kidney transplant recipients. [1] The therapy consists of a personalized cocktail of lytic bacteriophages, which are viruses that specifically infect and destroy bacteria. [4] The phages are selected to target the patient's specific strains of *Escherichia coli* and *Klebsiella pneumoniae*, the bacteria commonly responsible for rUTIs in this patient population. [1] The treatment is administered intravenously and is being evaluated in a Phase 1/2 randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial (NCT06409819) to assess its safety, tolerability, and feasibility. [1, 3] Prior case reports from UCSD have demonstrated successful treatment with phage cocktails under FDA emergency IND approval. As an investigational therapy in early clinical development, it does not have a commercial brand name.
