Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bacteriophage EFLK1 is a lytic bacteriophage belonging to the *Spounavirinae* subfamily of the *Myoviridae* (or *Herelleviridae*) family. It was isolated from sewage effluents by researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to target vancomycin-resistant *Enterococcus faecalis* (VRE), particularly strains that had developed resistance to another lytic phage, EFDG1. EFLK1 has demonstrated potent lytic activity against both planktonic and biofilm-embedded *E. faecalis* in vitro and in vivo, including models of prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) and root canal infections. It is often studied alone, in combination with antibiotics (such as vancomycin or ceftriaxone), or as part of a phage cocktail with EFDG1 to prevent the emergence of phage-resistant bacterial mutants.
