Overview
The topical bacteriophage gel is an investigational microbial therapy being developed for the treatment of acne vulgaris. It consists of a cocktail of bacteriophages—viruses that specifically target and lyse *Cutibacterium acnes*, the primary bacterium associated with acne pathogenesis. By selectively reducing the population of *C. acnes* without disrupting the broader skin microbiome or contributing to antibiotic resistance, the gel aims to provide a targeted alternative to conventional antibiotics. The "Bap AC Study" is a first-in-human, open-label clinical trial in Japan, sponsored by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), evaluating the safety and efficacy of twice-daily application of the gel in patients aged 12 and older.
