Overview

Bacteriophage K (also known as phage K) is a well-characterized, strictly lytic polyvalent bacteriophage belonging to the *Myoviridae* family and *Twortvirinae* subfamily. It exhibits a broad host range and is highly active against *Staphylococcus aureus*, including methicillin-resistant *S. aureus* (MRSA), vancomycin-intermediate *S. aureus* (VISA), and other multi-drug resistant (MDR) clinical isolates. Phage K infects host bacteria by binding to cell wall components (such as wall teichoic acids), injecting its double-stranded DNA genome, replicating intracellularly, and ultimately lysing the host cell via phage-encoded endolysins (e.g., LysK). It has been investigated as an alternative or adjunctive therapeutic agent for *S. aureus* infections, including bacteremia, osteoarticular infections, and bovine mastitis. Clinical-grade preparations of phage K have been manufactured and administered to patients under FDA emergency Investigational New Drug (IND) compassionate-use protocols.
