Drug intelligence / Profile preview
`bacteriophage PYL` (also referred to as `phage P¥L`) is a lytic bacteriophage isolated and characterized by researchers at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, University of Karachi. It specifically targets carbapenem-resistant *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* (CRPA), a major pathogen associated with community-acquired skin and soft tissue infections, particularly burn wound infections. While monotherapy with bacteriophage PYL shows moderate lytic activity, it is susceptible to the emergence of resistant bacterial clones. However, when used in combination with the carbapenem antibiotic meropenem, bacteriophage PYL exhibits strong synergistic antibacterial activity (phage-antibiotic synergy), significantly reducing the minimum inhibitory concentration of meropenem, disrupting biofilms, and accelerating wound healing and bacterial clearance in burn wound infection models.
