Overview

Bacteriostatic sodium chloride is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic solution of 0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl) in water for injection with benzyl alcohol (0.9% or 9 mg/mL) added as a preservative[1][2][4][8]. It is primarily used as a diluent for parenteral drugs that require dissolution or dilution before intravenous administration and as a flush for intravascular catheters[2][4]. The presence of benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth in the solution and allows repeated withdrawals from multi-dose vials[1][2]. Bacteriostatic saline also has mild local anesthetic properties due to benzyl alcohol[4]. It is not intended for use in newborns due to the risk of toxicity from benzyl alcohol. Sodium and chloride ions provided by this solution are essential electrolytes involved in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance within the body[5].
