Overview

Bactine is an over-the-counter (OTC) topical first aid product used for the treatment of minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. It is a combination formulation containing the antiseptic benzalkonium chloride and the local anesthetic lidocaine. Benzalkonium chloride acts as a surface-active agent that disrupts microbial cell membranes, providing antiseptic protection to prevent infection. Lidocaine provides immediate pain relief by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, thereby inhibiting the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses. Originally developed by Miles Laboratories in 1947 and first marketed in 1950, the brand was acquired by WellSpring Pharmaceutical Corporation in 2015. It is marketed in various forms, including sprays, liquids, and ointments, and is noted for its "no-sting" application.
