Overview

Badushengjisan is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) topical powder formulation historically used for the treatment of skin ulcers and wounds. It was first documented in the Qing Dynasty medical text “Jiu Shang Mi Zhi.” The formula is primarily indicated for drawing out toxins, eliminating suppuration (pus), and promoting granulation tissue formation to aid wound healing. Its main active ingredients are toxic minerals such as arsenic and lead compounds (notably realgar/arsenic sulfide and lead-based minerals), combined with other mineral components like red ochre, calomel (mercurous chloride), calcined calamine (zinc oxide), and calcined alum. The combination of these substances is believed in TCM theory to reduce the toxicity of individual mineral components while enhancing therapeutic effects on chronic or infected wounds. Modern research suggests that compatible herbs within Badushengjisan may attenuate renal injury induced by arsenic and lead exposure through mechanisms involving metallothionein induction and increased superoxide dismutase activity[1][2][3][4]. However, due to its content of heavy metals, safety concerns exist regarding systemic absorption.
