BAFFR-Fc is a recombinant fusion protein designed to act as a soluble decoy receptor for B cell-activating factor (BAFF). BAFF is a crucial cytokine belonging to the TNF superfamily that promotes B cell survival, maturation, and antibody production. By binding to BAFF, BAFFR-Fc prevents its interaction with natural receptors on B cells, thereby inhibiting BAFF-mediated signaling. This mechanism aims to reduce pathogenic B cell activity and autoantibody production, making it a potential therapeutic agent for autoimmune disorders. Preclinical studies in murine models of autoimmune hyperthyroidism (Graves' disease) have demonstrated that BAFFR-Fc can significantly reduce hyperthyroidism and levels of thyroid-stimulating autoantibodies.
