Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BAHCS1 (Babesia alpha-helical cell surface 1, also known as BmSA1) is a GPI-anchored protein expressed on the surface of *Babesia microti* merozoites and in the cytoplasm of infected erythrocytes. It is being investigated as a recombinant protein subunit vaccine candidate for the prevention of human babesiosis, a tick-borne zoonosis caused by the intraerythrocytic parasite *Babesia microti*. In preclinical studies, immunization with recombinant BAHCS1 (expressed in *E. coli* or mammalian cells) formulated with adjuvants such as Montanide ISA 51/CpG has been shown to induce strong humoral and cellular immune responses, leading to a significant reduction in peak parasitemia and overall parasite burden following challenge.
