Overview

Bai Jie Zi (Semen Sinapis Albae, or white mustard seed) and Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis yanhusuo) are two traditional Chinese medicinal herbs often used in combination for their complementary effects. Bai Jie Zi is primarily used to warm the lungs, resolve phlegm, and promote the flow of Qi to relieve symptoms such as cough with copious sputum and chest congestion. It is also believed to disperse clumps of cold-phlegm causing pain in joints or the abdomen[1][6][9]. Yan Hu Suo is renowned for its analgesic properties; it invigorates blood circulation, smooths Qi flow, and alleviates various types of pain including menstrual cramps, abdominal pain, and discomfort from injuries or inflammation[2][3][5]. The combination may be found in topical applications like San-Fu-Tie for respiratory conditions or as part of oral herbal formulas targeting both phlegm-related disorders and pain syndromes[7]. Mechanistically, Bai Jie Zi acts by promoting Qi movement and drying phlegm while Yan Hu Suo contains alkaloids such as dehydrocorybulbine that interact with pain pathways in the nervous system[3].
