Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Baiama is a biosimilar medicine containing the active substance aflibercept. It is approved for the treatment of adults with neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), visual impairment due to macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion (branch or central RVO), diabetic macular edema (DME), and myopic choroidal neovascularisation (myopic CNV). Aflibercept is a recombinant fusion protein that acts as a decoy receptor for vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), VEGF-B, and placental growth factor (PlGF). By binding these ligands, it prevents their interaction with endogenous VEGF receptors on the surface of endothelial cells, thereby inhibiting pathological angiogenesis and vascular permeability in the eye. Baiama has demonstrated comparable quality, efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity to its reference product Eylea in clinical studies[1][3][5][6].
