Baicalin is a flavone glycoside and a major bioactive flavonoid found in several species of the genus Scutellaria (notably Scutellaria baicalensis), as well as in Oroxylum indicum. Chemically it is the glucuronide of baicalein. Baicalin acts as a positive allosteric modulator at the benzodiazepine site and/or non-benzodiazepine site of the GABAA receptor and produces anxiolytic effects without sedative or myorelaxant properties in animal models. It also functions as an inhibitor of prolyl endopeptidase. Pharmacologically, it has demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor (including induction of apoptosis and cell cycle arrest), neuroprotective (notably in cerebral ischemia), antiviral (anti-HIV), and immunomodulatory activities. Baicalin is used primarily in traditional Chinese medicine formulations such as Shuanghuanglian and Sho-Saiko-To/Kampo medicine for various inflammatory conditions[1][3][6][9].
